We’re gearing up for the summer (more on that soon) and decided to update the Wires for Empathy official website. Here are some things to look out for:

  • Updated teaser! Lots of new shots, updated some older ones. This started as a an excerpt reel for Libre Graphics Meetup, and got edited down from 3 minutes to a more appropriate trailer length
  • Credits! Please check for your names on the credit list and yell at me if I missed you or got it wrong
  • Updated images! some of the images were from old renders – FIXED
  • Lil’ tweaks to the readability of the blog previews embedded in the site

Ok that’s about it! More soon on our summer plans!

blog attacked by spammers

Hey folks, just a quick update here- some of you may have noticed spammy google chaches for the site, and some nasty redirects on non existent pages. It appears spammers somehow managed to modify some  files, resulting in spam pages depending on the useragent (which is why google cache shows the spam but browsers don’t). […]

We’ve found the offending files, changed passwords, locked down access, reinstalled wp, etc. and think that we have cleaned up. I don’t think there was any payload in form of viruses or trojans to PCs browsing the site. We’ll keep our fingers crossed and a close eye to make sure things are back to normal.

I suppose it could have been worse. If you do find anything suspicious, please let us know.

New Downloads Area

As the project goes on, we’re putting links to various items in our blog; rigs, scripts, etc. This is only going to grow, and I don’t fancy the idea of them getting lost in a blog post somewhere on page 432… the obvious solution is to make a little download area to keep it all […]

Stay tuned for the end of this week, I’m looking to make a mini-release on the download page!
Oh.. The url for the download page is in the navigation bar (I hope) and just in case it isn’t: right here.

Calling all students (18+) and recent graduates:

This summer, Bassam will be working on Tube as a visiting artist in BitFilms’ very cool new collaborative studio program. We are not yet legally allowed to reveal its site, so must offer only the clue that BitFilms exists “at the intersection of industry and academia”, somewhere in the midst of Amherst and Northampton (Massachusetts).

The BitFilms studio will host several interesting projects and a lot of talent, so although the internships are unpaid, it promises to be a very stimulating and fruitful space. Please note that since this was a sudden development, time is short to apply. Intern applications are due (via email) no later than Tuesday, 19 May at 5pm (EDT).

From the FAQ: Interns will get to work on cutting-edge non-commercial graphics and animation projects under the mentorship of professionals in the field. Interns will have access to a fully-equipped workstation and substantial computer animation production infrastructure. Interns will receive a signed, written evaluation from their supervisor(s) at the end of the internship period acknowledging their contributions, as well as a credit in each final production they worked on.

More information at BitFilms, internship link at top. Still have questions? Comment!

using < video > instead of flash

I’d like to switch to using video with the new <video> tag available in newer browsers, such as the firefox 3.5 series and safari (soon opera), because it will be easier for people to view the website (currently using flash) with free software, and because it will be the more web-standards way to go. However, […]

However, I think it’s still important to have a flash fallback in case of people using browsers not yet capable of the <video> tag: does anyone have advice/exprience about doing this in wordpress? as far as I know, there is no wordpress plugin capable of it, but it is probably possible without plugins.
